# Car Dealership Cold Email Statistics 2026: 30 Numbers

*Email Deliverability · Updated 2026-09-18T18:35:00+01:00 · 7 min read*

**Provena has measured cold email to US car dealerships from two directions: a 43,302-send outcome ledger from June 2026, a September 2026 census of 17,659 franchise dealer domains, and an SPF and DMARC census of the 8,032 that receive mail. The numbers that matter most: 43% of dealer website domains accept no email at all; among those that do, Microsoft 365 holds 30% of domains and received 45% of contacts in a live campaign; Google Workspace recipients replied at 1.09% against 0.07% for Microsoft 365, a 14.8x gap on identical copy; Mimecast rejected 52 to 72% of sends as policy; and 44% of negative replies were about the contact having left, not the offer. Every figure below links to the study it comes from and may be quoted with attribution.**

This page collects every statistic Provena has published about email and US franchise car dealerships, so that a writer, analyst or vendor can quote one number without reading three studies. Each figure links to the study that produced it, states the population it describes, and carries the limits that apply. The figures come from three pieces of first-party work: the [June 2026 outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway) on 43,302 contacted dealership leads, the [September 2026 gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census) of 17,659 franchise dealer website domains, and the [September 2026 authentication census](/blog/dealership-email-authentication-census) of the 8,032 domains that receive mail.

Two units appear throughout. The benchmark counts people who were emailed; the census counts domains. Where the same question is answered by both, the page shows both and says which unit each number uses.

## Who receives dealership email

1. 43% of US franchise dealership website domains publish no mail record. Of 17,659 domains taken from manufacturer dealer locators, 7,680 accept no email at the website domain, so a guessed address bounces before any deliverability question arises. Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.
2. Microsoft 365 is the largest single destination for dealership mail, at 30% of the 8,038 dealer domains that receive email (2,396 domains). Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.
3. Google Workspace covers 13% of dealer domains that receive email (1,022 domains). Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.
4. 11% of dealer domains that receive email sit behind a security gateway such as Mimecast, Barracuda, Proofpoint, AppRiver, Sophos or TitanHQ. Mimecast alone fronts 5% (382 domains). Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.
5. Measured by people rather than domains, Microsoft 365 received 45% of contacts in a 10,760-contact dealership campaign sample, and Google Workspace 20%. Larger dealer groups run more staff per domain, which is why the people-weighted share is higher than the domain share. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway), contacts.
6. 9% of dealer domains that receive email use GoDaddy-hosted mail, and a further 35% resolve to other or self-managed hosts. Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.

## Reply rates by receiving gateway

1. Google Workspace recipients replied to dealership cold email at 1.09% across 43,302 sends from Google-hosted inboxes with identical copy and sequence. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).
2. Microsoft 365 recipients replied at 0.07% on the same campaigns, a 14.8x gap against Google Workspace recipients. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).
3. On Google Workspace, positive and negative replies arrived in equal numbers, 75 to 75. On Microsoft 365 the ratio was 24 positives to 5 declines, which is the signature of mail not being seen rather than a less interested audience. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).
4. Barracuda-fronted recipients who received the mail replied at 2.1% to 2.8% of delivered messages, the highest delivered reply rate of any gateway in the study. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).
5. Sophos-fronted recipients replied at 2.4% to 3.0% of delivered messages, on a small sample. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).
6. No replies were observed from Proofpoint-fronted or Mimecast-fronted dealership recipients across the study. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).

## Bounces that are policy, not bad data

1. Mimecast rejected 52% of dealership cold emails in one sending workspace and 72% in another, and produced zero replies. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).
2. Those Mimecast-rejected addresses had been marked deliverable by a paid email verification service before the campaign. A verifier tests whether a mailbox exists, not whether a gateway will accept an unknown sender. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).
3. Barracuda bounced 7% to 12% of sends and then delivered the remainder into inboxes that replied at the study's best rate, so a high bounce figure from Barracuda is filtering, not a dead list. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).
4. Microsoft 365 recipients bounced at 2.6% to 4.4% of sends, a low bounce rate paired with the lowest reply rate, which is why bounce rate alone misreads Microsoft-hosted dealers. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).

## Brand and state patterns

1. Volkswagen, GMC and Audi dealers are the most Microsoft 365-heavy franchises at 43%, 43% and 41% of domains respectively. Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.
2. BMW and Mercedes-Benz dealers are the most likely to sit behind a security gateway, at 24% and 23% of domains. Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.
3. Ford dealers are the least Microsoft-heavy major franchise at 22% Microsoft 365 and only 5% behind a security gateway. Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.
4. California is the most Microsoft-heavy state, with 41% of dealer domains on Microsoft 365, ten points above the next state. Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.
5. Virginia and Indiana are the least Microsoft-heavy states at 16% and 17%, and Virginia dealers use Google Workspace (18%) more often than Microsoft 365. Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.
6. New York dealers have the highest Google Workspace share of any large state at 24% of domains. Source: [gateway census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census), domains.

## List decay

1. 44% of 221 hand-read negative or stale replies were about the contact rather than the offer: retired, left the store, sold the dealership or changed roles. The list had passed every structural check before sending. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).
2. Reading the audit as a whole, the receiving gateway explained more of the variation in outcome than the copy did: the same sequence produced a 1.09% reply rate on one gateway and 0.07% on another. Source: [outcome benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway).

## Email authentication on dealership domains

1. 75% of the 8,032 franchise dealer domains that receive mail publish an SPF record, and 37% end it with a hard fail. Source: [authentication census](/blog/dealership-email-authentication-census), domains.
2. 47% of mail-receiving dealer domains publish a DMARC record; 23% enforce it with p=quarantine or p=reject, and 8% reject outright. 24% run the monitoring-only p=none. Source: [authentication census](/blog/dealership-email-authentication-census), domains.
3. 32% of mail-receiving dealer domains publish SPF with no DMARC record at all, the configuration that leaves the dealership's From address open to spoofing. Source: [authentication census](/blog/dealership-email-authentication-census), domains.
4. Dealers behind a security gateway enforce DMARC at 46% of domains; Microsoft 365 dealers at 34%; Google Workspace dealers at 15%, and only 7% of Google-hosted dealers hard-fail SPF. Source: [authentication census](/blog/dealership-email-authentication-census), domains.
5. Mercedes-Benz stores enforce DMARC at 40% of domains and Ford stores at 6%, among brands with 150 or more dealer domains receiving mail. Source: [authentication census](/blog/dealership-email-authentication-census), domains.
6. Florida dealers enforce DMARC at 44% of domains and Michigan dealers at 12%, among states with 100 or more dealer domains receiving mail. Source: [authentication census](/blog/dealership-email-authentication-census), domains.

## How to cite these statistics

Any figure on this page may be quoted in an article, deck, newsletter or product page with attribution. Name Provena as the source, state the year, and link to this page or to the underlying study. A short form that works in running text: "According to Provena's 2026 dealership email research, 43% of US franchise dealer domains accept no email at all." A reference form: Provena (2026), Car Dealership Cold Email Statistics, https://www.provena-ai.com/blog/car-dealership-cold-email-statistics.

Please quote the unit with the number. A domain share and a contact share answer different questions, and the two studies deliberately report both. If you need the underlying aggregate tables, the [benchmark](/blog/dealer-cold-email-deliverability-by-mail-gateway) and the [census](/blog/dealership-email-gateway-census) each publish theirs in full, and the [editorial standards](/editorial-standards) page describes how Provena data is collected and reviewed.

## How the numbers were produced

Benchmark: 43,302 contacted dealership leads across three Provena-operated sending workspaces, exported in full through the sending platform's API on 9 June 2026. Every recipient domain's MX records were resolved and mapped to a gateway. Reply and bounce rates are recorded provider events, so they depend on provider event coverage; a sent event is not proof of inbox placement, and the study is an observational ledger, not a controlled experiment.

Census: 17,659 franchise dealership website domains collected from manufacturer dealer locator pages in September 2026, with the franchise brands and state recorded by the locator. MX records were resolved for every domain and classified against the published mail exchange hostnames of each provider. 1,876 domains that failed to resolve were excluded; the 7,680 domains with no MX record were spot-checked to confirm the website resolves and the domain returns no answer for mail. Brand and state tables include only cohorts with at least 150 dealers (brands) or 100 dealers (states).

Authentication census: SPF and DMARC TXT records resolved for the census domains on 18 and 19 September 2026, reported for the 8,032 that receive mail; DKIM is not measured because selectors cannot be enumerated from outside. All three studies were produced for Provena's own [automotive outbound work](/solutions/automotive), where dealer lists are classified by gateway before a campaign is built, and Microsoft-hosted recipients are routed to Microsoft-hosted senders. The [dealer outbound playbook](/blog/dealership-outbound-playbook) explains how that routing is applied, the [SellMyRide case study](/case-studies/sellmyride) shows it running for a dealer-facing vendor (more in the [case study library](/case-studies)), and the [email deliverability hub](/blog/category/email-deliverability) collects the rest of Provena's deliverability writing.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the average cold email reply rate for car dealerships?

It depends on the receiving mail gateway more than on the copy. In Provena's 43,302-send benchmark, dealership contacts on Google Workspace replied at 1.09% and contacts on Microsoft 365 replied at 0.07% to the same sequence. Quoting a single dealership reply rate hides that 14.8x gap.

### What email provider do most car dealerships use?

Microsoft 365 is the largest single provider, at 30% of US franchise dealer domains that receive mail, and it received 45% of contacts in a live dealership campaign. Google Workspace holds 13% of domains. About 11% of domains sit behind a security gateway such as Mimecast or Barracuda.

### Why do so many dealership emails bounce?

Two reasons that look the same in a report. 43% of dealer website domains accept no email at all, so a guessed address at the website domain is dead on arrival. Among domains that do receive mail, gateways such as Mimecast reject unknown senders as policy: Mimecast bounced 52 to 72% of sends that a paid verifier had marked deliverable.

### Can I use these statistics in my own article or deck?

Yes. Quote the figure with Provena named as the source, the year, and a link to this page or the underlying study. Please keep the unit with the number, because the census reports domain shares and the benchmark reports contact shares.

### How current are these car dealership email statistics?

The outcome benchmark was exported on 9 June 2026 and the domain census was run in September 2026. Provena updates this page when a new study is published; the dateModified on the page records the last change.
